The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) has embarked on a prepaid tolling system, a move the parastatal says will improve efficiency in revenue collection.

A prepaid toll card was this Wednesday launched by Zinara as part of a two phased exercise aimed at increasing accountability and transparency in the administration of the revenue collection.

Officially launched the prepaid toll card, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Dr Obert Mpofu said the use of information communication technologies (ICTs) is critical in the development and management of transport infrastructure.

"The manual system was prone to counterfeiting and prejudiced Zinara as fake licences and toll books were now being produced on the black market. This new system will not only maximise revenue collection but also increase transparency and accountability on the administration's activities. This will also enable visible development to the motoring public who fund the development," said Dr Mpofu.

The first phase covers the 17 tollgates outside of the Mutare-Plumtree route, with the second phase covering the remaining nine toll plazas along the route.

Zinara has so far computerised all the 26 tollgates vehicle licensing system and transit fees.
