MASQUERADING as a Vehicle Inspection Department agent and duping a Birchenough Bridge vehicle owner of $740 landed a Buhera man in trouble after being arrested in connection with the offence recently.
Moses Mhlanga (37) of Tama Village under Chief Chamutsa in Buhera, who is employed as a driver at Avis at Harare International Airport, pleaded guilty when he appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Noah Gwatidzo, facing charges of defrauding Godfrey Gandaidza.
He had lied to Gandaidza that he could facilitate the clearance of his South African registered vehicle.
Mr Gwatidzo was expected to sentence Mhlanga on Wednesday, but had not done so by the time of going to Press.
Representing the State, Ms Edith Phiri, said on January 5, at about 9am, Gandaidza approached Mhlanga and enquired if he could assist him in clearing his South African registered Ford Cortina pick-up.
On January 6, at around 10am, Mhlanga met Gandaidza, with the latter handing over the vehicle's duplicate papers as well as $300 for him to facilitate the clearance.
Both of them signed a handover and takeover agreement which was witnessed by John Chikukute in the presence of Gandaidza's wife.
On January 8, Mhlanga while in Harare requested for $100 from Gandaidza who complied and sent the amount through the accused's Ecocash registered line.
On January 12, at about 2pm, Mhlanga approached Gandaidza again and requested for an additional $300 which he received in the presence of Chikukute.
Mhlanga promised to return with Gandaidza's vehicle processed papers on January 14.
On January 23, Gandaidza phoned Mhlanga making a follow-up on the papers, but he did not pick up the phone.
Gandaidza later phoned using somebody's cell phone and Mhlanga answered the call.
When he realised that it was Gandaidza phoning, he switched off the phone.
Gandaidza started suspecting foul play and instituted his own investigations.
He received a tip off of Mhlanga's whereabouts and proceeded to Harare where he was hiding.
Upon arrival, Gandaidza located Mhlanga and reported the case to Harare Central Police and the accused was arrested.
The value defrauded was $740 and nothing was recovered.
