A MUTASA woman on Sunday night went berserk and allegedly hacked her husband with an axe in a bitter domestic dispute.
The late Manners Bhowa (49), who was deputy headmaster at Nyakatsapa High School, was found dead on the couple's matrimonial bed at the United Methodist Church-run institution.
The couple had a long-standing dispute over the wife, Pamela Phiri Bhowa's alleged possession of a goblin.
She allegedly struck him several times on the head with an axe.
He bled profusely and died instantly. She covered him with a blanket and left for her workplace in Penhalonga.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, said: "She told her two children that their father had gone out. In the evening they prepared supper for him and left it in the kitchen.
"On June 15, the children thought that their father had gone to work before a workmate told them that he was absent. They opened the bedroom door and saw his body lying on the matrimonial bed. They reported the matter to the police. We carried out investigations and arrested Pamela after thorough interrogations."
The unremorseful Pamela, a teacher at Little St Augustine's Primary School was arrested on Tuesday and confessed to have committed the spine-chilling murder.
Speaking with a straight face shortly after returning from the crime scene with investigation officers on Wednesday, Pamela said that she had committed the heinous act as revenge to the physical abuse she had suffered at the hands of her husband.
She described him as a "violent", "heartless" and "jealous" husband who never appreciated her as a wife.
"Baba (Manners) vainetsa, vaindishungurudza. He was very abusive and he called me deregatory names whenever we argued. On the day I killed him, he had assaulted me accusing me of possessing a goblin. Ainditi ndine chikwambo. He was so jealous of me because I am an achiever. I achieved a lot even in teaching, I always excelled. I am now realising that I was wrong by disguising to people, including family members that all was well in our marriage. I was tired of his violent tendencies," she said.
She added that she was living a lonely life.
"His mother never loved me. She never appreciated me as a daughter-in-law. She always spoke bad things about me. We tried to find common ground and settle disputes amicably, but Manners never respected me. She attributed all my achievements to a "goblin" he claimed I own. Ainditi ndirimukadzi wechikwambo. Ndakazviita neshungu. I was in pain. I was tired of the abuse," added Pamela.
The couple sired two children together, aged 20 and 23.
A sombre mood engulfed the Nyakatsapa area on Wednesday when the late deputy headmaster was being led to his final resting place, with irate villagers failing to come to terms with the gruesome Villagers interviewed called for a stiffer penalty on the perpetrator.
"I think this was uncalled for given that there are numerous ways she could have solved the challenges that the couple was facing. In fact, walking away was better than killing a human being like an animal," said Nomore Mapara a villager in the area.
Insp Chishiri urged members of the public to settle disputes amicably and seek professional advice.
"Disputes should be solved peacefully and amicably by, for instance, seeking professional counselling, consult elders or the ZRP community relations department.
"Violence has never been a solution to settle disputes. It has detrimental effects like unnecessary loss of lives," he said.
In an unrelated incident, a 27-year-old man from Muchererwa Village in Buhera allegedly brutally axed his wife once on the head after he was accused of possessing evil spirits.
Never Mutebuka was arrested and is assisting police with investigations. Mollyn Zivengwa (19) died instantly after sustaining serious injuries.
Police said on June 12, at around 9pm, the two retired to bed in their bedroom hut with their nine-month-old baby.
They had a misunderstanding after Mollyn accused Never of having evil spirits.
