The Zimbabwe Informal Sector's Organisation has made a passionate appeal to Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo to abandon the idea of forcible eviction of vendors in central business districts.
In a statement today (Sunday) the organisation said that the move risk exacerbate the problems and wastes government's already meagre resources on endless and needless running battles between the police and the vendors.
Vendors have up to June 26 to vacate all undesignated areas in major centres.
Below is the full statement:
Zimbabwe Informal Sector's Organisation is developing a letter urging Chombo to abandon the idea of forcible eviction of vendor's altogether and instead initiate an inclusive dialogue with a view to finding an amicable and sustainable solution to the issue.
The sheer statics show that the informal sector has become an integral component of our economy. 6 million in the informal sector about 7 billion US dollars in circulation within the sector. Our view is that force will only exacerbate the problems and waste government's already meagre resources on endless and needless running battles between the police and the vendors. This would trigger and plunge the country into political instability the very cancer we are trying to kill.
