Scores of villagers in Burma Valley in Mutare are secretly keeping deadly landmines in their homes saying the explosives contain mercury.
An Norwegian NGO had to hold demonstrations in the area for villagers to accept that the explosive have no mercury.
"The quality of landmines and remnants of war devices found at Border Streams (Burman Valley) is quite large.
"In Mozambique our sister company found 676 landmines in the hands of villagers who said they discovered them while cultivating their fields" said Clemence Homba, Norwegian People's Aid site supervisor in Burma Valley.
Homba was addressing members of the Parliamentary Portfolio committee on Defence and Home Affairs.
He added "Zimbabwean locals also found 124 landmines and some did not open up and decided to keep them hidden because they thought they had mercury in them."
