'Angry' Mugabe fires Jonathan Moyo?
24 Jun 2015 at 06:21hrs | Views
Information Minister Jonathan Moyo has lost his cabinet post because he is no longer a non-constituency Member of Parliament.
Details of what really happened are still sketchy. One view is that he was fired; the other is that what has happened is merely procedural and that he will bounce back into cabinet.
Moyo was appointed by President Robert Mugabe following the 2013 elections although he had lost his legislative seat, which he regained in the by-elections two weeks ago.
And legally, that means he could not continue serving as information minister because the premise under which he was appointed had changed, legal sources said.
Other sources told VOA Studio 7 President Robert Mugabe was angry at Moyo in today's cabinet meeting, accusing him of contesting the by-elections without personally informing him.
It remains unclear whether President Mugabe will reappoint Moyo or not. Analysts say given the rancor and fighting in Zanu PF, Moyo might not return.
Morgan Tsvangirai's former senior advisor Alex Magaisa said in his blog today: "Ministers are appointed from among Members of Parliament.
"Up to five Ministers chosen on the basis of their professional skills and competence may be appointed from outside Parliament.
"Moyo was among the five who were appointed under the Presidential appointment facility because he had lost the Tsholotsho North seat in the 2013 elections. Therefore, he served as a Minister, although he was not an MP."
