POLICE have pressed culpable homicide charges against the driver of a Mutare-bound bus belonging to Tenda Bus Company that killed two people on the spot and injured 31 others
Two people died on the spot while 31 others were seriously injured when a Mutare-bound Higer bus belonging to Harare-based Tenda Bus Company got involved in an accident near Rusape.
Police have attributed last Friday's accident to speeding, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle that subsequently veered off the road.
Those injured were rushed to Rusape General Hospital where some were treated and discharged while some are still receiving treatment.
Manicaland police spokesman Inspector Enock Chishiri said Tamuka Marangure (42) is set to appear in court on culpable homicide charges.
"The bus was speeding which resulted in the accident. We are levelling culpable homicide charges against him for causing the death of the passengers. The driver had 60 passengers on board when the tragic incident occurred.
"He lost control of the bus at the 177km peg along the Harare-Mutare Highway which resulted in the vehicle veering of the road and hitting trees in the process.
"Two people were killed on the spot and these are Hardwork Makota and Samuel Nenzema. A total of 13 passengers were seriously injured and they were rushed to Rusape General Hospital."
Insp Chishiri urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
"We always urge drivers to exercise caution on the highway and avoid speeding. They should stick to speed limits."
