Harare Residents Trust have accused one of the councillors, Wellington Chikombo who chairs the Resources Committee, for trying to defend the Harare City Town Clerk Tendai Mahachi following his suspension by the city mayor Benard Manyenyeni to pave way for investigations into council's maladministration of funds.

The Trust said the presence of Mahachi at Town House can only be condoned by people in the Council and Government who have a lot to lose if he is removed from Town House.

"The HRT respects the position taken by the Mayor of Harare that the Town Clerk should go on an indefinite leave to pave way for investigations into the council affairs under his management," said the Trust.

"We are saddened by the attitude of the other councillors, especially the Chairperson of the Human Resources Committee Councillor Wellington Chikombo who has become the chief defender of the beleaguered Town Clerk."

The Trust questioned why should a councillor defend a Town Clerk who takes home US$38 000 every month against Government's instructions on salaries of Town Clerks.

Mahachi was suspended recently by Manyenyeni amid revelations there were some irregularities in the use of council funds.
