THE University of Zimbabwe will reopen its halls of residence to students today. UZ Vice Chancellor Professor Levi Nyagura yesterday said students from out of Harare and the disabled would get preference.
"I have decided to take the risk of opening the institution's halls of residence at this point because there is a 100 percent involvement of all the stakeholders that include Ministries of Local Government,
Higher and Tertiary Education and Finance among others.
"The students will survive on the water that is currently collecting in the institution's 2,5-megalitre reservoir while a permanent solution to the problem is sought," he said.
Government has set up a Cabinet taskforce chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara to deal with the water crisis.
The City of Harare and the Zimbabwe National Water Authority have been blamed for failing to provide uninterrupted water supplies to the campus to enable students to stay in hostels.
