Acting President Phelekezela Mphoko has slammed the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) for poor corporate governance in managing distressed mines.

The ZMDC has come under fire for its alleged incompetence.

Mphoko expressed displeasure over the way the ZMDC, the government arm tasked with managing mineral resources and mining infrastructure, has handled affairs in the sector.

Commenting on the state of Mhangura Copper Mine and Golden Kopje Gold Mine in Makonde district that have been left in a state of limbo, Mphoko blamed the poor state of the infrastructure at the two disused mines on the ZMDC for failing to give proper advice to the government.

Mphoko says the ZMDC needs functional units such as the research component if it is to diligently discharge of its duties.

The Acting President could not proceed with a scheduled tour of Mhangura Mine upon realisation that there was virtually nothing to see at the defunct firm.

He later proceeded to tour Lions Den GMB depot, where he revealed the government has acquired some tractors, 60 of which will be distributed to A1 and communal farmers in Mashonaland West.

The tour also took Mphoko to Golden Kopje Gold Mine.

He was accompanied by Ministers Prisca Mupfumira and Faber Chidarikire and legislators Jennifer Mhlanga and Kindness Paradza as well as several provincial heads.
