Robbers in police uniforms arrested

Four Harare men have appeared in court on allegations of robbing an Ecocash dealer and goods worth $91 000 from a sports bar while wearing police uniforms.

Irie Vibes Ecocash booth and Sportsman Bar in Highfield, Harare were victims of the robbers, Richard Timba, Pressure Gwadzoka, Gilbert Somanje and Shepherd Simbarashe Hove.

Anti-riot gear, which includes police button sticks, drab caps, police reflective bibs, handcuffs, an AK riffle, emex danger explosives and South African vehicle number plates were recovered from the accused and were produced in court as exhibits.

The state represented by Norman Tsarwe said the four were involved in a spate of robberies in and around Harare posing as police officers.

Prosecutor Tsarwe further revealed that the accused were caught after a tip off leading to the recovery of police uniforms and goods worth US$1000.

The defence lawyer, Zivanai Macharaga argued that the accused were framed and assaulted by police to force them to make a confession.

However, the witness and arresting officer, Damson Chatukuta said no force was used.

The four were remanded in custody to the 16th of July for continuation of trial.
