The processing of raw milk into yoghurts, cheese and dairy juices is vital to the country's economic blueprint - ZIMASSET, a minister has said.

Matabeleland North minister of State Cain Mathema told delegates at the Zimbabwe Dairy Industry Trust annual general meeting in Bulawayo today that government recognise daily farming as a catalyst for promoting development activities.

He said the sector contribute to the value addition and beneficiation cluster of ZIMASSET.

Matabeleland region contributed a mere 11,4% to the national annual milk production last year, a minister has said.

"Currently there are 36 registered dairy producers, one operational large scale milk processor and 4 medium scale processors in Matabeleland," said Mathema.

"The monthly milk demand in Matabeleland is over a million litres. The gap in demand is filled by milk imports largely from South Africa."

He added "Through further  processing of raw milk into yoghurts, cheese and dairy juices, dairy production also contributes to the value addition and beneficiation cluster of ZIMASSET."
