HARARE City council has pledged to assist thousands of Glen View Area 8 Home Industry Complex small-to-medium entrepreneurs who lost their wares to an inferno on Wednesday.
The fire, believed to have started around 1am, torched several stands including a nearby ZB Bank branch.
Council said it was ready to engage the traders and redesign the market to ensure easy accessibility and to ensure that funds generated from renting the market is reinvested to grow the market and provide infrastructure such as ablution facilities.
Below is a statement from council:
HARARE Mayor Cllr Bernard Manyenyere, his Deputy Cllr Thomas Muzuva, councillors, Town Clerk, Management and staff commiserate with the thousands of trades and manufactures who lost their goods at the Glen View Home industry to a fire.
The City is ready to engage with the business persons who were affected to chart the way forward, redesign the market to ensure easy accessibility and to ensure that funds generated from renting the market is reinvested to grow the market and provide infrastructure such as ablution facilities.
The destruction of the market is a huge loss to the Harare economy and threatens livelihoods of thousands of our residents.
It is very unfortunate that the goods were destroyed at a time council, Government and the informal sector were working together to improve the welfare of the trader through provision of decent trading places.
