BRUTALLY assaulting her seven-year-old nephew with a hot iron bar earned a Mutasa prophet's wife eight months behind bars.

Memory Chanaiwa of Rakarasika Village under Chief Mutasa appeared before senior magistrate Mrs Sekai Chiundura last Thursday, facing charges of assaulting the boy (name withheld) resulting in sustaining a deep cut on his right buttock.

Prosecuting, Mr Donald Mudadirwa said on June 5, the boy arrived home around 5pm from Nyakatsapa Primary School.

When he arrived home, he found the furious Chanaiwa waiting for him at the doorstep, holding an iron bar in her hand.

Chanaiwa started assaulting the boy without asking for the reason why he had came home late.

On the next day, Chanaiwa forced the boy to go to school despite the fact that the child had sustained serious injuries.

The boy's teacher, Mr Tarumbwa noticed that the boy was nursing serious injuries and contacted Chanaiwa's husband, Nyindai Gweredza, a prophet at St Elisha Church.

Gweredza was in Wedza at that time, attending a church service. When he was informed of the development, he immediately abandoned the church service and went back home.

Upon arrival, Gweredza realised that his nephew was in pain and he took him to Bonda Mission Hospital.

He reported the matter to the police, leading to Chanaiwa's arrest.

A couple who refused to be named witnessed the incident and confirmed that the child had suffered immensely at the hands of Chanaiwa.
