Villagers fatally assault a suspected thief

THREE Chipinge villagers last week allegedly teamed up to fatally assault a suspected thief they accused of stealing their property. The trio-Robert Dube (26), Themba Dube (32) and Freddy Chivhunze (32) of Mwaingeni Village under Chief Musikavanhu area appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Vusomuzi Gapara on Tuesday for initial remand.
They were not asked to plead and were advised to apply for bail at the High Court since they were facing a third schedule offence.
They were expected back in the dock on August 13.
It is alleged that Robert and Themba last Wednesday at around 5pm picked Jonah Dingani, Kudakwashe Manyezu and Kiven Madoda at Chikore Business Centre and loaded them in their Nissan Cabstar vehicle, Registration Number ACR 5192 after accusing them of stealing their bicycle, clothes and a 1200 cellphone.
Prosecuting, Mr Witness Nyamundaya, said: "While in the vehicle, Themba started assaulting the three with a whip and an electric cable. The three confessed to have stolen the property and they drove to a nearby bush where it was hidden. All the missing property was recovered. They then drove to Pfidza Business Centre where Freddy Chivhunze joined in assaulting the three with a whip several times all over their bodies."
Mr Nyamundaya said they drove to their homestead where they force-marched the three into their dining room.
"Robert grabbed an iron bar and continued assaulting Jonah Dingani several times on the head. They later released the three at around 10pm, but Jonah was having difficulties in walking. On the following morning, Jonah was found dead along a footpath about 200 metres from the Dube homestead by Philip Machedu who made a police report. Post mortem was carried out by Dr Guvheya who confirmed the cause of death as head injuries," said My Nyamundaya. All the accused surrendered themselves to the police.
