HARARE City Council is set to auction more than 105 vehicles that were impounded for violating various traffic laws and remained unclaimed after owners failed to pay fines.
The public auction is due this week.
National Auctioneers said the vehicles included a conventional bus and several illegal taxis plying the city-Parirenyatwa Hospital route.
"Duly instructed by the City of Harare, National Auctioneers will be conducting a public auction sale for impounded vehicles at City of Harare Central Stores on Thursday, August 6 starting at 10 am," read the auctioneers' statement.
Municipal traffic police have of late been descending heavily on wrongly parked vehicles or those found picking up passengers at illegal pick-up points as the local authority seeks to restore sanity and ease congestion in the central business district.
A traffic offender is expected to pay a fine ranging from $120 once a vehicle has been clamped and towed away where it accumulates storage fees of at least $12 per day depending on the size of the vehicle.
