A CHIPINGE man, Philip Mashava (38), was arrested while a manhunt for his colleagues only identified as Puranyemba and Mukambwe has been launched in connection with the murder of Happimore Mashume (38) of Chiminya Farm under Chief Mutema.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the incident that happened at Lilysvale Farm last Saturday. He said: "Mashume of Chiminya Farm under Chief Mutema was drinking beer at Maseure homestead in the company of Mashava, Puranyemba and Mukambwe, among others.
"As they were drinking beer, Mashava asked Mashume why he was sitting next to his wife Deliwe Mtisi (35). A misunderstanding arose between the two, but it was resolved by other patrons.
Mashava and Mtisi later left for their house around 10pm. Mashume also left a few minutes later, but his way home passed through Mashava's house. As he was passing, Mashava saw him and a misunderstanding arose between the two again.
Puranyemba and Mukambwe are alleged to have arrived at the scene shortly and joined Mashava in assaulting Mashume.
"Mashume did not make it home that night and around 7am, the following day his wife, Juliet Gombiro (24) decided to make a follow-up. She suspected that her husband might have been drunk and slept along the way.
"The follow-up failed to yield any possible leads. She later discovered a trail of blood starting from Mashava's house. Villagers started following the trail which led them to a nearby river where they discovered Mashume's body half buried in the mud along the river banks," said Asst Insp Chananda.
Mashava was arrested and investigations are in progress.
Puranyemba and Mukambwe are still at large.
