A wedding ceremony for an Inter Cape cross-border bus driver at Chitungwiza Magistrates' Court was stopped mid-way yesterday and turned into a trial after another woman claimed she was still married to the bridegroom.
When Ms Modey Kanovhetenga objected to the wedding, presiding magistrate Ms Jessy Kufa stopped the proceedings and adjourned the court for a moment.
In her objection to the wedding, Ms Kanovhetenga said: "He is my husband. We were married in 2003 and have two minor children together, and we are still married."
Ms Kufa then adjourned the court and returned donning her court regalia.
She went straight into the trial of Kudzai Munetsi who was about to exchange vows with his new lover Appolonia Mupandauya.
During the trial, Kanovhetenga revealed that she was customarily married to Munetsi in 2003 and they were blessed with two children - a girl aged 10 and a six-year-old boy.
She told the court that she stays in Kwekwe, while Munetsi lived in Chitungwiza because of his job.
"My husband was a truck driver before he got employed as a cross-border bus driver at Inter Cape buses," said Ms Kanovhetenga.
"He never divorced me and today I am surprised that he came here to wed."
But Munetsi denied this.
"I once stayed with her as my girlfriend for two years and I cannot remember the dates, but it was between 2000 and 2003 before I went to work in South Africa in 2005," he said.
"I returned in 2009 as a truck driver and never stayed with her since I used to be in and out of the country."
Kanovhetenga cornered Munetsi when she asked him if he had never sent his young brother and a relative to pay for her bride price.
"Is it not that when you paid lobola you demanded to sleep with me when I was a virgin, while claiming that the Z$45 000 you were charged was outrageous?" she said.
"And when I fell ill in 2013 after we tested HIV positive in 2009, you appended your signature as my husband so that I could receive ARVs."
After hearing arguments from both sides, Ms Kufa rolled the matter to today for judgment.
