Grenade scare in Harare CBD

A grenade was found close to a bank in the Central Business District in Harare yesterday and security personnel were urgently dispatched to the site where they collected the military ware.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed that they had received the report.
"I can confirm that we received a report of a rusty M962 Chinese-made grenade, which was discovered near FBC Building Society along Leopold Takawira Street at around 7am," he said.
Asst Insp Chazovachiyi said police details and members of the Zimbabwe National Army's Bomb Disposal Unit attended the scene and took the grenade away for further investigations and, to try and identify the perpetrators.
When reporters visited the scene, the grenade had already been disposed of by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit.
Mrs Emilda Nefutali (35) who is employed by the City of Harare as a cleaner told The Herald that she was doing her morning duties at the scene when she came across the grenade at around 6am.
"I then kicked it trying to identify what it was but it did not move," she said. "I kicked it again and it moved once before I felt the urge to leave it and continue with my duties.
"Its appearance made me think that it was a stone sculpture since it was rusty. Soon after leaving it alone, passers-by said I was lucky to be alive as I was kicking a grenade. From that instance I was so shocked."
An airtime vendor Mr Freejoy Nyanya said he rushed to stop one motor vehicle driver from running over the grenade.
This week, the Army Bomb Disposal Unit defused three M962 grenades and two RPG7 rockets that were discovered at two homesteads in Lupane District, Matabeleland North.
The army was engaged after villagers discovered the arms of war in their fields.
Lupane district was an assembly point for Zipra combatants when ceasefire was declared and it is common for villagers to stumble upon arms of war in their fields.
