WhatsApp messages exposed four cheating Ordinary Level Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Integrated Science paper 2 candidates half-way through the exam at Mabvuku High School.

The quartet pleaded not guilty to charges of contravening the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council Act when they appeared before Harare magistrate, Ms Sharon Rutendo Rakafa.

The candidates are; Tafadzwa Musarurwa (22), Collin Maliseni Xavier (20), Progress Chitsungo (26) and Kudzaishe Munakandafa (16).

Complainant in the matter is Zimsec represented by its security officer Ms Prisca Maredza.

Prosecutor Mrs Devoted Gwashavanhu-Nyagano alleged that on November 17 last year around 2pm candidates were seated for their O-Level examination at Mabvuku High School.

Around 3.30pm, the examination supervisor, Mr Philemon Humbe, received a report from invigilators that a cellphone was ringing in one of the piled bags in the examination room.

Mr Humbe was told that another candidate, Tarisai Nyawai, had divulged that the cellphone belonged to Musarurwa and that it contained answers to the question paper being written.

Musarurwa was called to the Deputy Headmaster's office and was asked to unlock his cellphone.

It was discovered that the mobile phone contained WhatsApp messages containing the same question paper being written.

The WhatsApp messages were sent from a mobile number 0774 999 838 belonging to Xavier.

Xavier was called for questioning and he implicated Chitsungo as the source of the question paper.

Chitsungo implicated Munakandafa who in turn implicated Rufaro Bvumbi who is on the run.

The four were subsequently arrested.
