ZCTU in fresh bid to demonstrate

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has threatened a follow-up job cuts demonstration this weekend after police last weekend crashed the union's planned mass action citing manpower shortages.
In quashing the protests, police expressed fears that the event could be hijacked by other forces.
The demonstrations are in reaction to the July 17 Supreme Court ruling, which has already caused over 20 000 job losses countrywide.
In a letter dated August 17 and addressed to the Officer Commanding Harare District Police, ZCTU secretary-general Japhet Moyo said the labour body intended to demonstrate in support of government's ongoing efforts to amend the Labour Act to minimize job losses and ensure retrenched workers receive fair compensation.
