The government has reversed the Harare City Council's move to retrench 3000 workers on three month notices.

The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere blocked the dismissal, questioning how the council came up with such a huge figure.

Minister Kasukuwere confirmed the development in a telephone interview, explaining that the city council should go back to the drawing board and properly lay out their rationalisation and turn-around plan instead of making a rushed decision.

Meanwhile, the MDC-T Harare Youth Assembly has called for an immediate 5-year suspension on Harare Mayor, Councillor Bernard Manyenyeni for sanctioning the dismissals.

The youth also want the Human Resources and General Purpose Committee Chairperson, Councillor Wellington Chikombo and Chairperson of the Finance Committee, Councillor Panganayi Charumbira to be suspended and an investigation to be carried out on all the MDC-T councillors who took part in the meeting that approved the retrenchments.
