Police blocks MDC Renewal inaugural congress

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has reportedly blocked opposition MDC Renewal from holding its inaugural congress in Harare.
Several MDC Renewal members told Bulawayo24.com said police refused to clear the congress.
The two day congress was planned for City Sports Centre between Friday and Saturday. Police are said to have used Public Order and Security Act (POSA) introduced in Zimbabwe in 2002 by a Zanu-PF dominated parliament to block the congress.
The Act was amended in 2007. The chief architects of this piece of legislation when it was formulated were Professor Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Chinamasa. Political activists and civic organisations regard Posa as what helped President Robert Mugabe consolidate his power. The law gave untold powers to the ZRP.
Through this legal framework, the partisan ZRP members have the final say when it comes to public gatherings such as rallies.
