The ZCTU Harare demonstrations went well on Saturday without any incident. This is after the High Court overturned a police ban on the ZCTU Harare street protests over the massive job losses that are current taking place.
In a statement the ZCTU stated that scores of workers joined the ZCTU in the demonstration after the High Court gave the nod this morning at around 0600hrs. Most people had given up after been discouraged from coming when they had last night that the police had banned the demonstrations.
"Unknown people also printed thousands of fliers which they distributed around down telling workers not to join the demonstrations," reads the statement.
"The ZCTU had notified the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) of its intention to hold protest in Harare today 22 August 2015 against job losses as well as the threat to the existence of trade unions."
Late afternoon, the police wrote to the ZCTU claiming that the "intended demonstration was not sanctioned due to the fact that the reasons for the demonstrations have been overtaken by events since the issue is now being dealt with in parliament".
The ZCTU, through the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, immediately made an urgent application to the High Court and Justice Mawadza overturned the police order.
The ban of the ZCTU demonstration is the second one in less than a month after the police ban countrywide demonstrations on flimsy grounds that it had no ‘capacity to provide security services and that the protest would be "hijacked" by other people with their own intentions.
