Zimbabweans have implored President Robert Mugabe to at least commit himself to meaningful human rights and economic reforms if his State of the Nation address today is not to become a complete damp squib and if the is to be brought back from the edge of the precipice.
Respected labour expert, Godfrey Kanyenze said unless there was a paradigm shift on the part of Mugabe and other senior Zanu-PF leaders, Zimbabwe would remain trapped in the throes of poverty and economic decline despite today's address.
Mugabe is expected to set the tone for economic recovery by outlining the Government's achievements and priorities of the country over the next year, when he delivers the State of the Nation address this afternoon.
The yearly event serves as a means for the President to inform the nation about the country's present socio-economic and political situation.
President Mugabe is expected to tackle various issues that touch on socio-political and economic factors among them Government's intervention to curb job losses triggered by a Supreme Court ruling last month that upheld common law.
