Govt justifies job cuts

A senior official in the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting services, the parent ministry of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Co-operation (ZBC), has leapt to the defence of the jobs carnage at the state broadcaster, saying the bloated wage bill was unsustainable.
Like several other media organizations and companies, ZBC last week reportedly sent home about 400 workers on three months' notice.
The national broadcaster has since closed its Gweru-based Voice of Zimbabwe station and shut down its second television channel after dismissing its workers.
Retired Major Anywhere Mutambudzi, the Director of Urban Communications said the bloated workforce at ZBC was not compatible with resources, leaving the company accruing debts monthly.
