A tout in Harare has been sentenced to perform 105 hours of community service after he assaulted his colleague in a dispute over which kombi should be loaded.
Mavhuto Mahata (36) was sentenced to six months in jail and three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining three months were suspended on condition he performed 105 hours of community service.
In his plea he told the court that he was angered by his colleague only identified as Sipho when he argued with him over which kombi should be loaded.
He asked the court to forgive him saying touting and vending were the only sources of earning a living and if he is jailed he would not be able to sustain him family.
The court heard that on August 7 this year the two were touting for passengers in front of Parirenyatwa Small gate when Mahata attacked and assaulted Sipho.
Sipho reported the matter to the police leading to Mahata's arrest.
