IMMIGRANTS welfare bodies in South Africa and civic society groups have warned that the recent job losses experienced in Zimbabwe and cessation of "absentee" teachers' salaries by government could cause mass school dropouts and a great exodus of able-bodied Zimbabweans into South Africa to seek greener pastures.
More than 30 000 people lost their jobs following a recent landmark Supreme Court ruling allowing employers to terminate workers' contracts on three months' notice of pay.
A recent civil servants audit also led to the withdrawal of salaries for over 3 000 teachers who were deemed to be "ghost workers".
National administrator for the Migrant Workers' Association South Africa (MWA-SA), Ezra Maplanka, said the current state of affairs in Zimbabwe spelt doom for the education system.
