A 16-year-old woman (name withheld for fear of victimisation) is struggling to get money for food, while she waits for her one week old baby receives treatment at Harare Hospital.
This was revealed by the Harare Residents Trust which said the baby was born with intestines bulging outside.
"The baby girl, born last Tuesday, weighed 2,7 kilograms at birth, but unfortunately cannot be breastfed because of this condition," said the trust. "The mother is concerned that her baby is not being attended to, and the drip is not properly inserted, forcing her to approach some nurses at the hospital but they ordered her not to interfere with their work."
The trust said this young woman told the HRT team that "I think the nurses just want me to wait for the death of my child.
"The baby continues to cry and the drip is not moving, and the child is not breastfeeding, so how do they expect the baby to survive. I asked and was told to get out of the ward. Is that how they must treat us the poor?" said the trust.
