THE Zanu-PF Women's League has distanced itself from alleged planned demonstrations to force the ouster of the party's National Political Commissar Saviour Kasukuwere. Messages circulating on social media yesterday alleged that a demonstration was planned against Kasukuwere at a date to be announced. The messages added that 12 buses had been organised to ferry Zanu-PF members from Bulawayo to Harare for the protests, adding that leaders of all the party's organs were behind the demonstration.
But Women's League deputy secretary Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo yesterday said as women leaders they were shocked to be fingered in such trivial and divisive matters. Moyo said the alleged protesters want to confuse party members. "The Women's League isn't part of the demonstration. The Women's League has never been approached. Whoever is organising the demonstration wants to be mischievous. They want to deliberately divide the party," said Moyo.
She urged members of the Women's League to execute decisions that have only been made through proper party channels. "I'm advising members of the Women's League to desist from doing things that have nothing to do with the party's mandate. As far as we're concerned, we don't know the people organising the demonstration," she said.
Moyo said people who are plotting the unsanctioned protest should not abuse the party's name and organs to fulfil their selfish agendas. "In whatever they're doing they've no right to claim us. They listed us in their demonstration yet we've never worked with them," Moyo said.
She said the Women's League is pre-occupied with developmental and empowerment issues and had no time for retrogressive agendas. "We're pre-occupied with development and empowerment of women. We want to see women succeed. We want to address the mandate of the party. Issues that people should be seized with are ensuring the success of Zim-Asset," she said.
Moyo said they have just finished an empowerment workshop for women that will see them taking the initiative on development matters. She said the First Lady Grace Mugabe has set the ball rolling on women empowerment issues. She added that Mugabe had spearheaded the revival of irrigation at the Bulawayo Kraal in Binga which is line with the government's economic blueprint Zim-Asset on food security.
The 15,000 hectare Bulawayo Kraal will be the largest irrigation project in the region and can rescue Matabeleland region from the shackles of poverty as the country continues to receive erratic rains.
