POLICE from the Border Control Unit have arrested two Harare men for allegedlly smuggling four vehicles stolen from South Africa through an illegal crossing point in Beitbridge. Hillary Nduna, 40, and Brightman Moyo, 40, were arrested last week following months of surveillance and tracking by detectives for smuggling four vehicles near Dite area, some 60km east of Beitbridge town.
The two appeared before Beitbridge magistrate Innocent Bepura yesterday charged with smuggling and were each granted $400 bail. They were told to reside at their given addresses until the matter was finalised and to report once on Fridays at Border Control Unit and Avondale police station in Harare as part of the bail conditions.
Jabulani Mberesi, prosecuting told the court that between November 2013 and August this year, Nduna stole an Isuzu pick-up truck in South Africa which he then smuggled into Zimbabwe through the Limpopo River. He also avoided paying import duty for the vehicles and went on to forge a Zimbabwe registration book. He then displayed fake registration plates on the vehicle.
Nduna was arrested in Harare by detectives following months of investigations. Further investigations revealed that the car was not in the Central Vehicle Registry system. Mberesi said Moyo stole the vehicles from the same country namely a BMW 3 series, VW Golf and an Amarok double cab which he smuggled into the country using the same modus operandi.
He said the duo was arrested on August 31 and all the vehicles were recovered. He said the value of the vehicles was yet to be ascertained.
