A veld fire disaster has claimed the lives of four people in Mashonaland West's Hurungwe and Zvimba districts, leaving others injured and some families homeless.
The veld fires claimed the lives of a woman and her two children aged six and five at Shola Park in Hurungwe, and the life of a one-year-nine months old baby burnt while asleep at Spesbona farm in Trelawney, Zvimba East constituency.
Four people were also injured at Spesbona farm while trying to extinguish the fire.
The veld fire, which started off in the Mapinga great dyke area left a trail of destruction to property, leaving some families homeless and in need of food, clothing and blankets.
Elsewhere in Zvimba's Ward 20, two luxurious farm houses were destroyed, one of them at Ilsham farm belonging to Christ Embassy leader Pastor Ruth Musarurwa.
The Environmental Management Agency's provincial manager for Mashonaland West Eunice Mutepfa told the ZBC News that the Hurungwe fire also destroyed 11 homes, including five teachers' houses in the Birimahwe area.
Meanwhile, the Zvimba District Civil Protection Committee led by District Administrator Mr Andrew Tizora has since visited the affected families in the district to assess the extent of the disaster and to identify immediate needs of the victims.
Mr Tizora expressed concern over the incidence of veld fires in Zvimba and Hurungwe.
Last year, Hurungwe district had the worst fire record in the country prompting authorities to launch the 2015 National Fire Awareness Campaign in the district last June.
