A SERIAL armed robber who posed as a police officer and robbed unsuspecting motorists has been slapped with a nine year jail.
Boston Jochoma pleaded not guilty to two counts of armed robbery, but was found guilty for one count after full trial.
Prosecutor Malvern Musarurwa told the court that on December 11, 2008 at the 2km peg along Harare-Mutare Highway, the accused who was armed with a pistol and in the company of Charles Muchayo (now late) robbed Peter Muzawazi of his Nissan Hardbody (GED 647).
Jochoma and Muchayo hatched a plan to carry out a robbery and the two went to Penhalonga, armed with a Llamma pistol which had a charged magazine. They later stopped the complainant's vehicle, asking for a lift to Mutare and Muzawazi agreed.
Along the way, most of the passengers disembarked, leaving the accused persons and one woman named Elizabeth Mujaji. On approaching the Christmas Pass, Jochoma and his accomplice asked the driver to stop so that they could relieve themselves. As he did not suspect anything, Muzavazi agreed as he also wanted to check his tyres.
As he was checking his tyres, Muchayo suddenly produced a pistol and pointed it to the complainant, ordering him to lie down.
Muzavazi tried to escape, but Jochoma caught up with him and they started wrestling. When Muchayo saw that his accomplice was being overpowered, he shot Muzavazi on the right thigh.
The duo then tied Muzavazi to a tree by the roadside and took off in his car which they later dumped in Gutu at Mupandawana Growth Point where it was recovered by police detectives.
Jochoma was eventually arrested at Chakohwa Business Centre and the pistol was recovered.
He will serve an effective seven years after two years were suspended on good behaviour.
