The National Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Board (NIEEB) has been given a directive to ensure that pledges made by companies to community share ownership trusts are paid up.

The directive was given by newly appointed Youth, Indigenisation and Empowerment minister Patrick Zhuwao who today toured the NIEEB offices in Harare.

Of the 61 community share ownership trusts registered, only 20 are operational and of the $116 million that was pledged, only $40 million was paid up.

NIEEB must make a follow up and ensure companies pay their dues, says Zhuwao.

"From now on let us not take pledges to the President. Let us talk about monies that were not paid up," he said.

Concerns were also raised over some officials who are jumping the gun and speaking negatively on indigenisation.

Zhuwao says they are fuelling confusion and portraying an image of policy inconsistency.
