A CHINESE man has been taken to court for allegedly beating and ill-treating his five dogs in violation of the law on prevention of cruelty to animals.
Zhenggao Jie (53) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Sharon Rutendo Rakafa last week and was remanded to October 6 after the court failed to find a Chinese interpreter.
Prosecutor Mrs Devoted Gwashavanhu Nyagano told the court that on September 11, an informant Mr Glyivis Vaughan - a chief inspector for the Zimbabwe National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - received information from Mrs Quinton Dean Oliver on how Zhenggao was always ill-treating and beating up his dogs.
Zhenggao would tie his five dogs up and beat them.
Mrs Oliver produced a video footage showing how the Chinese man ill-treated the dogs. Mr Vaughan reported the case to the police after watching the video.
Police visited Zhenggao's house, number 16 Wavell Road in Highlands and arrested him. The dogs were taken to the SPCA.
