AN Upper Six Mwenezi High School pupil died recently in a hit-and-run accident on the 50km peg along Masvingo-Zvishavane Road while on an educational trip to Victoria Falls.
The schoolboy was hit after disembarking the school bus during a brief stop-over at Mhandamabwe, resulting in the trip being cancelled because of the accident.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the accident occurred on Friday at around 7AM.
"I can confirm receiving a report to that effect but we're yet to receive fine details on what exactly transpired," said Insp Mazula.
Chief Maranda, under whose jurisdiction the pupil Godfree Matavire, 19, of Bhadhagi Village came from said the pupil died on the spot after he was hit by a vehicle that failed to stop at the accident scene.
"I'm told the boy was doing his Advanced level studies at Mwenezi High School. They were travelling to Victoria Falls on a bus when tragedy struck. Upon arriving at Mhandamabwe, the bus stopped and pupils disembarked for a brief recess," said Chief Maranda.
He said the boy was one of the first pupils to drop off the bus.
Chief Maranda said Godfree's body was taken to Chibi Mission Hospital mortuary.
The school trip had to be cancelled as the bus was ordered to return home with the other pupils. Chief Maranda said the whole area was still in shock following the untimely death of the pupil whom he described as bright.
