AN airtime vendor allegedly disappeared with recharge cards valued at more than $4 000, which he had been given to sell.
Gabriel Nyama (24), of Number 204 Sunningdale Plats at the corner of 9th Avenue and Samuel Parirenyatwa Street in Bulawayo, was allegedly given airtime recharge cards to sell on behalf of NetOne on 28 July.
He was supposed to cash in after seven days.
Nyama allegedly disappeared with the money he had received from selling the recharge cards and Mr Wellington Dodzo, a manager at NetOne, made several attempts to get in touch with him.
It is alleged that Nyama kept dodging for the whole month.
Mr Dodzo then reported the matter to the police, leading to Nyama's arrest.
He was arraigned before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Marilyn Mutshina on Friday facing a charge of theft as defined in Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
Nyama's plead of guilty was later altered to not guilty when he indicated that he had a defence after the State read the elements of the case.
He was then remanded out of custody on $100 bail to 23 September for trial. Nyama was instructed to report to Bulawayo Central Police Station once a week as part-of his bail conditions.
The State, represented by Mr Dumisani Moyo, alleges that Nyama was given airtime recharge cards valued at $4 250.
He was supposed to return the money on 4 August after selling the airtime recharge cards.
The court heard that he was on the run until his arrest last week.
The State alleges Nyama sold the recharge cards but converted the money to his own use and kept making false promises that he would return t he money.
