VICE PRESIDENT Phelekezela Mphoko has warned people in leadership
positions against abusing government facilities aimed at improving the
agricultural sector saying state assistance should reach ordinary
people.
VP Mphoko said it was sad to note that farming machinery such as tractors which was distributed by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) during Gideon Gono's tenure as governor only benefited the big wigs at the expense of the ordinary people.
He said President Mugabe was worried about the welfare of ordinary people and wants them to benefit from every government scheme like the land reform which he said was aimed at uplifting the people's socio-economic status.
"President Mugabe is concerned about the people and wants to know if the people have been given tractors, farming inputs and the land. Now we have the tractors from Brazil , 400 of which President Mugabe commissioned and they're targeting A1 farmers and His Excellency wants to see them going to the rightful people," said VP Mphoko.
"There are those tractors that were distributed by Gono, they only benefited the big people and not the ordinary people and that's not good if the country is to develop," he said.
He said the government was going to avail more tractors to A2 farmers, adding that ordinary farmers were going to benefit from the scheme.
He said he was instructed by President Mugabe to tour the provinces and see progress on the ground before reporting back to him.
As such, VP Mphoko said he has been to Matabeleland North and South Provinces and Mashonaland Central among other provinces.
The Vice President said Zimbabwe was a rich country which was endowed with a great deal of minerals which he said had a value of about $15 trillion.
The Vice President said it was sad to note that gold from Kwekwe was used to develop London in Britain and not the development of the country.
Vice President Mphoko said it was puzzling how Zimbabweans, numbering about 14 million people were poor when they were sitting on wealth.
"We have gold, platinum and many other minerals which if exploited can make each and every Zimbabwean a billionaire. That's what we want and that's what President Mugabe is calling for. We need to think outside the box, think of how to tap these minerals. We can't afford to wait for outsiders because they'll charge some fees and develop their areas at our expense," he said.
The Vice President said the government was going to take back the Cotton Marketing Board so that stability returns to the cotton growing sector.
Today the VP visits Gokwe North.
