A BULAWAYO woman will spend the next nine months in prison for scalding her husband with boiling water after accusing him of infecting her with HIV.
Nozithelo Ngwenya, 27, yesterday appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Sibongile Msipa Marondedze facing a charge of domestic violence after she also hit her husband, Tichaona Mlambo, 30, with a stick.
Msipa Marondedze found Ngwenya guilty and sentenced her to 15 months in prison.
She suspended six months on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.
Mlambo told the court Ngwenya poured hot water on his face after they had a misunderstanding over money.
Ngwenya in her defence told the court that she assaulted her husband because he had infected her with HIV.
"My husband infected me with HIV. He spends weeks away from home leaving me alone with the children. He'll be away with girlfriends," she said.
Prosecuting Mufaro Mageza said on September 20 at around 10AM, Mlambo discovered that $300 which he had left under the bed at the couple's home in Pumula East suburb was missing.
He confronted his wife, leading to a misunderstanding.
"Ngwenya took a cup of boiling water from the stove and poured it on Mlambo's head, scalding him on the left side of the face and on the neck," said Mageza.
The State produced a medical report which confirmed that Mlambo sustained burns on his face and neck.
