War Veterans Minister, Christopher Mutsvangwa, told Parliament last week that his ministry was in the process of compiling a comprehensive database of all people who participated in the war of liberation with view of paying gratuities and other benefits to the families of those who died during the war as well as those who passed on before they could be rewarded in 1997.

In 1997, government, under pressure from war veterans was forced to award gratuities of ZW$50,000 (then about US$4,000) to each of the surviving 50,000 war veterans as well as monthly pensions.

This windfall however did not cover those who had died before the benefits were paid out.
