The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have banned the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) from commemorating September 13 to mark police brutality. This commemoration has become a calendar event for ZCTU and has been commemorated each year since 2007. The police brutality event took place on September 13 in 2006.
The police said the holding of the commemoration has not been sanctioned because the commemoration has the potential threat of opening already healed wounds and that there is a potential threat that the ZCTU event may be hijacked by political malcontents and criminals and degenerate into violence.
In the event of any defiance, ZRP said it shall not hesitate to invoke the Provisions of Section29 of the Public Order and Security Act, Chapter 11: 17.
ZRP Kuwadzana has been instructed to monitor ZCTU activities and deal with any form of defiance .
The ZCTU has already instituted a court challenge on this ban through the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
Below is the letter from the police banning the commemorations.
