Harare council police assault residents

Harare City Council police are reported to have assaulted residents in Budiriro 2 during the demolishion of of illegal houses.

Zimbabwe Human Rights Lawyers Communications manager Kumbirai Mafunda posted on Face book a picture of one Shepherd Machokoto who was seriously beaten on the head.

"This is the handiwork of Harare City Council municipal police officers who on Wednesday 30 September 2015 assaulted Wilbert Bondera and Shephered Machokoto during a demolition blitz of several houses in Harare's high density suburb of Budiriro. Despite being the victims, Bondera and Machokoto were detained at Budiriro 2 Police Station and were only released after the intervention of Kennedy Masiye of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights," said Mafunda.

"According to Section 74 of the Constitution, No person may be evicted from their home, or have their home demolished, without an order of court made after considering all relevant circumstances."
