A Seke 4 High School teacher is battling for his life at Chitungwiza Central Hospital after he was attacked on the genitals by his wife during a scuffle. Tawanda Tinazvo (36) of Unit O, Chitungwiza, was still admitted following the attack last Friday.
His wife, Abigail Antonio (31), has since appeared in court charged with domestic violence. Antonio is also a teacher at Seke 5 High School . She was not asked to plead to the charges when she appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo yesterday.
Antonio was remanded to October 14 on $100 bail. Prosecuting, Mr Tendai Mukariri told the court that on the day in question, Tinazvo came back home from conducting extra lessons at around 10pm. The court heard that he discovered that his wife had not left any food for him and was already in bed.
He asked Antonio why she had developed a habit of not cooking for him. Antonio allegedly confronted Tinazvo accusing his mother of being evil and that she had been influencing him to do "bad things". However, Tinazvo professed ignorance on the matter and joined Antonio in bed.
The court heard that she got up and told Tinazvo that she was going to teach him a lesson. It is alleged in a fit of rage, Antonio allegedly punched him on the head and got hold of his private parts and pulled them hard.
He managed to free himself and ran for dear life, with Antonio in hot pursuit. She caught up with him at the gate. It is further alleged that Antonio reached for Tinazvo's privates and pulled them severely until he started bleeding.
Tinazvo was later rescued by a commuter omnibus driver who was passing by. The matter was reported to the police leading to Antonio's arrest.
In a separate case of domestic violence, a 43-year-old Chitungwiza man was yesterday sentenced to eight months in prison for amputating his wife's thumb in a dispute over sadza. Admore Mulauzi of Unit M pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges when he appeared before Mr Murendo.
Mulauzi was sentenced to one year in jail but four months were set aside on condition of good behaviour. In passing sentence, Mr Murendo likened Mulauzi's behaviour to that of a dog. "You acted like a rabid dog," said Mr Murendo.
Mr Murendo said it was the courts' duty to preserve marriages, but if it comes to Mulauzi's behaviour, it was better to break them by incarcerating people of such a behaviour. The court also took into consideration that cases of domestic violence were rife with women nearly always on the receiving end.
Facts of the case were that on October 1, at around 10pm, Mulauzi arrived home and asked his wife, Consilia Chamboko (38), why she failed to serve him his supper.
Trouble started when Chamboko tried to explain but this did not go down well with Mulauzi, who became angry and started punching Chamboko. He also throttled her before grabbing her hand and biting her thumb, chopping it off in the process. The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest.
Mr Tatenda Mukatera prosecuted.
