The Harare West MDC-T Jessie Fungayi Majome has said her district family mourns the cruel tragedy of the losses of the child and niece at the end of last week, then wife on Sunday, and then the mother, on Monday, of the acting organising secretary Pemberayi Hiya.
"He, as the deputy organising secretary is acting as the secretary since the sad passing away of out irganiding secretary Cllr Lancelot Mudavanhu in July. To lose four close family members in the same week is a blow of unimaginable horror and pain. It's like a terrible dream, yet so real," she said.
"The two children perished in an inferno in a makeshift thatch bathroom at Pemberayi Hiya's rural home in Chikwaka, his wife the late Kesiwe , our very own heroine received mortal burns in trying to rescue the trapped children. She was transferred to the Parirenyatwa Hospital burns where she passed way after a gallant fight. I was saddened to learn of this from the hard working and compassionate ward sisters on Sunday evening when I went to visit her, together with a baby of one of our party cadres who is also in the same burns ward. All this while Pemberayi Hiya's mother was the intensive care unit at Harare Hospital, and she tragically passed away just the day after her daughter in law."
Majome said Pemberayi Hiya gallantly and stoically travelled between the two hospitals tending to his wife and mother, including having to bear the expenses of buying their medication as our sorry hospitals have none, as well as burying the two children.
"I thank the hospital staff for their care. While we also mourn the death of my colleague Hon. Thamsanqa Mahlangu I extend my very profound condolences to our Pemberayi Hiya, and pray for his strength to see this through as we bury his late wife and mother in Musana today," she said.
"I will seek bereavement counselling services for him because this is a load one cannot ordinarily be expected to bear. He has to soldier on with looking after his two infant surviving children. Pemberayi Hiya himself is a man with a big heart - he , with our district secretary Cde. Edgar stepped in for free to repair the roof of our treasurer Mai Masundire's house which was gutted by fire in July."
She said he is a skilled and certified carpenter and handyman who, like the teeming 95%, is unemployed.
"If you have work for him or wish to show him kindness in any other way please inbox me. May their dear souls rest in eternal peace," she said.
