A 27-year-old Chivhu man allegedly stabbed his wife with a knife in the face and struck her seven times with an axe before he committed suicide following a domestic dispute.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident.

"I can confirm the death of Itayi Zinzombe of Plot 7 Reitkop who committed suicide after stabbing his wife Tatenda Gatsi (21) in the face and striking her with an axe seven times following a domestic dispute," he said.

Inspector Muzondo said Gatsi was battling for her life at Chivhu General Hospital where she was in a serious condition.

It is alleged that on October 5 Zinzombe had a misunderstanding with Gatsi who was accusing him of having an extra marital affair.

The two reportedly resolved the issue and retired to bed at around 9pm.

At around 2am it is alleged that Zinzombe woke up and armed himself with an okapi knife and stabbed Gatsi in the face.

Gatsi managed to disarm Zinzombe and tried to flee to no avail as he caught up with her just 100 metres away from their homestead and this time he was armed with an axe which he struck her with.

It is alleged Zinzombe struck Gatsi four times with the axe on the left leg and once on both hands and once above the right eye.

After realising that he had committed a serious offence it is reported that Zinzombe told Gatsi that he was proceeding to commit suicide.

Earlier that morning fellow villagers saw Gatsi lying on the ground in agony and took her to Chivhu General Hospital for treatment while others conducted a search for Zinzombe.

Zinzombe's body was later found hanging from a tree branch about 400 meters away from his homestead.

The matter was reported at Chivhu police who attended the scene.

Insp Muzondo appealed to members of the public to seek professional counselling to resolve domestic problems.
