THE University of Zimbabwe heist that occurred last week has implicated THREE security guards from Brising Security Company and they have appeared in court. They are accused of conniving with a quartet of men who are still at large to rob the University of Zimbabwe of money amounting to US$83 000. The suspects, Luckson Chimuzinga, 38, Finias Machimbiri, 41, and Munyaradzi Nyakatsapa, 29, were not asked to plead to robbery charges when they appeared before Harare magistrate Don Ndirowei.
The trio was remanded out of custody to September 28 for interim remand on US$50 bail each. Allegations are that sometime in September, the three connived and hatched a plan with the four who are still at large to fleece the UZ of money which they were tasked to transport to the CBZ Bank UZ complex. It is the State's case that the trio reached an agreement that the four (who are still at large) would waylay the three guards near the bank and they would in turn offer passive resistance.
Prosecutor Joyce Sithole alleged that on September 6 around 3pm, the three security guards transported money from the UZ cash office to CBZ bank in the same complex for banking. As planned, the State alleges, the other four accomplices arrived at the place armed with a pistol and waylaid the three at the bank's entrance.
The three, who had deliberately left a gunner at the cash office did not offer any resistance and the four had an easy job of taking the money amounting to US$83 000 and driving off in a getaway car. It is the State's case that the trio deliberately neglected to take the vehicle registration number and furthermore did not attempt to pursue the vehicle. The State, had opposed the trio's admission to bail but the court noted that pre-trial incarceration was undesirable considering that the trio were family men.
