Man gets 12yrs for raping own sister (9)

A Bindura man (22) has been sentenced to an effective 12-year prison term for raping his nine-year-old sister.

Wonder Marisa had pleaded not guilty to rape when he appeared before Bindura provincial magistrate Ms Mavis Kudumba who, however, slapped him with the prison term after a full trial.
Ms Kudumba suspended 18 months of the sentence on condition of good behaviour and that Marisa does not commit a similar crime in the next five years.

In passing sentence, Ms Kudumba said rape was a serious offence hence the need to severely punish offenders.
The State, led by prosecutor Mr Nyasha Chengeta, said on August 4 this year, the complainant retired to bed with her mother at around 10pm. The two were sharing the same room.
Later that night, Marisa entered the room and sneaked into his sister's blankets.

He undressed her and raped her once after which he remained in the house.
After about 30 minutes some four goats entered the room making some noise which awakened the mother.

The complainant then told her mother that Marisa was in her blankets and that he had raped her.
They made a police report leading to Marisa's arrest.
