The government will soon repossess all state land which land developers and housing co-operatives have failed to develop.
This was revealed by the Director for Housing in the Ministry of Local government, Public Works and National Housing, Mr Lexton Kuwanda during belated Manicaland provincial World Habitat Day commemorations in Mutare.
"Failure by land developers and housing co-operatives to deliver housing projects has pushed the government to move in and repossess state land. This is part of the implementation of the new housing delivery strategies to address the housing backlog that stands at 1.25 million nationally," said Mr Kuwanda.
The city of Mutare has forged strong public private partnerships in an effort to deliver housing stands.
Land developers representative, Mr Wilson Masokovere said providing low cost housing is the way to go in addressing accommodation challenges.
Through the effort of some land developers, the city of Mutare's housing backlog that stands at 50 000 will be reduced, noted the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Cde Mandi Chimene.
The World Habitat Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right of every individual to access adequate and decent shelter.
