Over 400 applications for diamond mining licenses have been submitted to Zimbabwe's government, Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu said last week at a mining conference in Harare.

Mpofu also reiterated his stance that Zimbabwe has fully complied with Kimberley Process requirements and insisted that the West had no business interfering with the country's diamond sales.

Zimbabwe's NewsDay news website quoted Mpofu saying that there was "nowhere in the world where systems are as impeccable as in the Marange diamond fields."  Mpofu issued his oft-repeated claim that Western powers were politicizing the KP process.

In a separate interview, Mpofu declared that Zimbabwe would not accept EU supervision of its diamond industry. "We've said that Zimbabwe should not be treated differently from other countries," the mining minister stated.
