Teachers have called on the government to capacitate and empower them through the provision of decent accommodation and better remuneration.
This was said by unions and associations representing teachers at the belated World Teachers Day commemorations held in Harare today.
Held annually on October 5 since 1994, World Teachers' Day recognises the role of teachers and mobilise support for them to ensure they will meet the needs of future generations.
Apex Council chairperson, Mr Richard Gundani said the day reflects on the status of teachers and what can be done to improve their lives as enshrined in the 1966 and 2009 International labour Organisation (ILO) and UNESCO recommendations.
UNESCON Education Programme Specialist, Mr Abdoul Wahab Coulibaly commended the government for the curriculum review in schools as this is set to improve the quality and standard of education.
The new framework and curricula will see science, agriculture, life skill and heritage being embraced, according to Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Dr Lazarus Dokora.
Teachers however said the success of the curriculum review depends on motivated staff, technology and infrastructure to support such a change.
